Affiliate marketing can be a very lucrative Internet business but just like any business online or off there are some pitfalls along the way that can hurt your long-term success. As an affiliate you have to find different ways to earn income although it is obvious you have to promote a product or service but how you do it can mean the difference between failure and success.
Here are 5 Product Recommendation Mistakes Affiliate Marketers Make:
1. Product Overload – many affiliates belong to more than a handful of mailing lists and are constantly bombarded with emails pitching the latest and greatest product. They are also tempted with the next big thing on a blog post, an e-zine ad or the latest free report they happen to read. How much value can a product you are promoting have if you are pushing hundreds of other products?
2. Product Bias – obviously no product is perfect. but affiliates will be scared to mention any negative points about it. People will respect the individual promoting more if they are honest about the good and bad aspects of the product. It’s even worse if they know the product actually sucks and they still promote it.
3. Product Selfishness – one horrible thing some affiliates do is scream and yell about how great the product is but fail to promote what it can actually do for potential customers. How can it make a difference? How can it help them?
4. Product Proof – some products can easily be judged whether it can work or not but many times potential customers want to see evidence, numbers, proof. Hard facts! Affiliates just want to make the sale but fail to understand people are looking for more than just talk. Don’t tell them how much you earned but how you earned it.
5. Product Pitch – here is usually the kiss of death. If your product recommendation is spoken or written like a sales pitch then the chances of making consistent sales will be minimal. Affiliates constantly make the same mistake of being the equivalent of a used car salesman and that just doesn’t fly with today’s consumer.
The good news is if you can show a consistent presence as an expert in your targeted market then recommending products could be your most powerful marketing tool.
How do you prove your expertise?
- Offer new and unique solutions people would not get from your competitors.
- Show proof that what you are promoting works as advertised.
- Provide endorsements and testimonials from known and respected people in your niche to enhance your credibility.

Hi Jimmy, I read your article on twitter and just joined it not to long ago. It just shows that not everyone is tuned into what you might Know all ready. Its getting yourself out there that seems to be the biggest task.Getting seen by some one and educating them a little.
I have one question when I signed up for carnaval it asked me for a permalink. Is that something I make up?
Like when I receive an e-mail from them your permalink shows up and all I have to do is click on it. I put the html code for carnival on my blog but I don’t know if that is a good Idea?
Thanks to Cerebral Barbed Wire for accepting this blog entry at your carnival: http://cerebralbarbedwire.blogspot.com/2009/03/cerebral-barbedwire-blog-carnival-march_03.html.

Hi Carl.
A permalink is simply a URL that points to a specific blog or forum entry after it has passed from the front page to the archives.
For example, instead of sending you to http://jimmyadames.com and have you look for an entry I will point you directly to it by giving you something like this for the latest entry: http://jimmyadames.com/affiliate-marketing-tips-5-product-recommendation-mistakes-affilate-marketers-make/
Putting the HTML code for the carnival on your blog can’t hurt, because quality inbound and outbound links helps with your search engine rankings.
Thanks for visiting.
